Lung Cancer Screening Could Benefit You!

November IS Lung Cancer Awareness Month.

Lung Cancer causes more deaths in the United States than any other type of cancer. This is because early stages of lung cancer often do not cause symptoms. Lung cancer screening for people who are at high risk can find cancer earlier, when it is easier to treat.

Here are a few details about the Lung Cancer Screening provided at Sabetha Community Hospital.

It is done with a low-dose spiral computed tomography (LDCT) scan. This scan is like a regular CT scan but with less radiation being used.

The benefits of a screening is that it can find cancer at an earlier stage. The screening may also find diseases in the chest other than lung cancer.

If your scan shows something that looks abnormal your doctor from Sabetha Family Practice will schedule an appointment to talk with you. Follow up tests will be needed to determine if the abnormality is cancerous. If nothing shows up on the scan, you will receive a letter that gives you recommendations for annual follow up screenings.

Lung cancer screening isn't for everyone. It is recommended that high risk people be screened. Information gathered and documented in your visit with your doctor will determine your eligibility for the LDCT screening.

Check with your insurance company to determine if LDCTs are covered under your insurance. Private payment is also accepted at the time of service.

For more information about LDCT, contact your physician or call Sabetha Community Hospital Radiology Department at 785-284-2121 to find out if Lung Cancer Screening is right for you.
