Pediatric Occupational Therapy

What is Pediatric OT?

Pediatric occupational therapy focuses on helping children achieve independence in all areas of their lives. This type of therapy through play approach focuses on activities that assist children to develop the skills of everyday life like feeding, dressing, or playing with a peer. For a child, their work is their play as they develop their abilities to explore their world and do things independently.

Who may benefit from OT?

Your child may benefit from pediatric occupational therapy if he or she displays any of the following:

  • sensory challenges (difficulty with temperature, touch, sound, etc.)
  • poor attention
  • decreased coordination
  • emotional challenges
  • difficulty with body awareness
  • feeding difficulties or picky eating
  • limited play skills, difficulty with self-care tasks
  • emotional reactivity
  • difficulty with self-calming

What can be accomplished through OT?

Occupational therapy services can help your child:

  • Achieve goals and develop life skills; for example, helping your child gain the skills needed to follow a simple morning routine.
  • Participate in everyday activities; for example, helping your child learn to manage zippers, buttons, and snaps for increased independence with dressing.
  • Develop play skills; for example, helping your child develop executive functioning, planning, and sequencing skills to engage in self-motivated play activities.
  • Learn to regulate sensory information; for example, helping your child learn to experience optimal level of arousal and regulation for improved regulation in high sensory environments.
  • Improve feeding and oral motor skills; for example, helping your child increase acceptance to new and nonpreferred foods for improved nutrition and ease at mealtimes, helping your child improve jaw strength and stability for improved chewing skills.
  • Achieve success with visual motor, fine motor, and bilateral coordination skills; for example, helping your child develop appropriate hand strength, precision, and coordination for success with completing age-appropriate puzzles and games.
